Creating a Deep Wrapped Bevel | | A deep bevel is a special effect that creates a dimensional, layered look that enhances the presentation of framed artwork. Depending upon the materials used and the overall size of the frame, the process allows for a variety of depths, depending upon the number of stacking mats used. 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board is an ideal material to create this custom look. Materials Needed: 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board (3/16") 1200/two-sided blade Straight line mat cutter Expression® Fusion® 4000 Adhesive Expression® Tacking Iron Japanese Mulberry Paper Acid-Free ATG Tape Process:- Cut five pieces of 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board the same size--16" wide by 20" long.
- Set the mat guide at the widest mat measure – in this case, 3” for the bottom board. Using a sharp, new 1200 double-sided mat cutter blade extended far enough to cut cleanly through the foam board at a bevel, begin with the bottom map and work to the top. Traditionally, these are not cut top map first.
- For the succeeding boards, recess the mat guide the equivalent of the bevel width of the board beneath--in this case, 1/8"--and cut the bevel all around. Following this procedure, the second mat from the bottom will be marked and cut at a 2-7/8" width, the third from bottom at a 2-3/4" width and so on.
- Tape the boards together with the ATG tape.
- To wrap the bevel, wad a new sheet of the Japanese mulberry paper into a ball to create a wrinkled piece. Then, tear the sheet into 4-inch-wide strips, or wider if the bevel uses more than five stacked mats. Cut matching strips of the Fusion® 4000 Adhesive Film.
- Mount this project by hand use an Expression® Tacking Iron. Begin on the center side, on the wide bevel face. Place a strip of the Fusion 4000 adhesive film against the flat of the bevel. Firmly press the wrinkled paper strip directly onto the film, lumps and all. Do not iron out the texture of the wrinkled paper strips.
- After completely pressing one side of the face of the bevel, press and activate the adhesive over the top edge or face of the mat. Next, lay the mat face down and complete the flaps inside the window, to the back, as with a wrapped mat.
- Complete the project by float-hinging the artwork to a sheet of 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board as a backing. Top the deep bevel with a painted bevel 4-ply museum mat to match.
Tips and Tricks:- 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board : Conservation-quality surface papers and creative potential is available all in one foam board. 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board is the perfect solution for discriminating framers in search of high quality, strength and adaptability to design.
100% Cotton Rag Foam Board is perfect for the preservation of important photographs, historic letters, maps and other documents. With its archival quality, pure-cotton surface and resilient foam center of chemically inert, non-acidic polystyrene, 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board lets you protect artwork from becoming weak, brittle and yellow with age. It is the only product to combine the handling ease of foam board with the quality and performance of 100% Cotton Rag surface paper. The 100% cotton fiber pulp surface is naturally white, acid-free and contains no lignin, alum, harsh chemicals or other artificial additives. The facing paper has a pH level between 7.7 and 8.7 and is buffered to maintain this level for years to come. The core is resilient polystyrene, which resists denting and crushing and has built-in memory. When cut, its edge returns to its original thickness. 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board offers consistency, rigidity and greater stability over traditional 4-ply museum boards, making it the perfect support and filler board while maintaining the benefits of true museum rag two-sided usage. Using 100% Cotton Rag in conjunction with appropriate conservation and preservation practices will give the ultimate in protection. The versatility of 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board allows it to be used as a creative alternative to museum mat boards, wood fillets or acrylic spacers and is a step up from regular acid-free foam board into preservation quality. As with all Foam Board products, 100% Cotton Rag Foam Board adapts beautifully to straight line mat cutting for shadow boxes, deep bevels and many mounting techniques.
- Fusion® 4000: Fusion 4000 is a clear, pure, acid-free adhesive film that melts best at 185º- 200ºF. It is perfect for textured surfaces, fabrics and most creative applications because it melts smoothly, evenly and completely. Materials are bonded as the adhesive cools and can be reheated to remove. It is the most versatile, porous, removable film adhesive available. Its clear nature, when melted, allows it to be used for tiered matting, wrapped and deep bevel mats with ease.
